Commemorating VE Day 80th Anniversary

Last week, we came together to commemorate 80 years since VE Day — a moment in history marking the end of WWII in Europe. Dressed in red, white and blue, we held a reflective collective worship where pupils explored why we celebrate this day, listened to the Royal British Legion’s song “I’ll Remember”, and discussed Lowry’s painting VE Day, followed by a minute's silence.
Thanks to Paul Bennett from the Great Bowden Historical Society, we received 10 copies of a war memorial booklet to help us explore our village’s role in the war. KS1 enjoyed a creative afternoon making flags, while KS2 researched two local servicemen — deepening their understanding of the real people behind the history.
A wartime-themed lunch and singalong brought the “street party” spirit to school — and to top it off, the PTA treated every child to an ice-cream in the sunshine with a visit from the ice-cream van!!
Thank you to everyone who made this day so memorable. Lest we forget.
